INFUSE : 3d printed lamp.

Infuse – a 3DPrinted lamp from Chris Ference.

Narrated by Chris himself.

The lamp is 3D printed from PLA: a biodegradable plastic derived from renewable resources.

The ideas of minimalism and simplicity have always attracted me. Having only what you value is something I believe in. Over the past year, I have tried to adopt these ideas into my designs by reducing the complexity of form to make products more intuitive and aesthetic pleasing.

When designing Infuse, I wanted to encourage productivity by drawing attention to the users work, rather than the lamp itself. This was achieved by creating a simple form that is familiar, yet stylish. To give the user more freedom with their workspace, the lamp base was made to only occupy a small area in contrast to the light itself.

Distraction is the demise of productivity. Research done by University of California’s Gloria Mark found that it takes about 25 minutes on average to refocus on a task after an interruption. With this in mind, an area of the lamps base is dedicated to holding the users phone while working. Your device is still accessible for conference calls and such, but is out of sight when you don’t need it. You’re friends latest tweet can wait…really.

The lamp is 3D printed from PLA : a biodegradable plastic derived from renewable resources. For this project, I was able to utilize a type of wood composite PLA. This allows for a strong and heavy base to support the light itself.

One of the things that I believe in when it comes to designs is accessibility. As a student, I am not able to produce and ship hundreds of lights, however I can provide the files for users to create it themselves. This may be seen as unconventional in the design world, however it opens up the doors for who can use your product, and where in the world it can be used. By publishing the files online, I hope to inspire others to make and share designs of their own.
