Movement Manipulation.

Investigation into issues of alcohol, young people and violence made in collaboration with Dutch Public Prosecution office (Openbaar Ministerie, OM).

It is almost impossible to stroke a cat against the growing direction of fur, how could it be if similar characteristics will be applied to a surface texture, which will mean you would be able to walk only in one direction. Crowdedness, lack of personal space, difference in culture and social expectation causes aggression on busy streets. While being sober we follow movement rules, trying to avoid contact and a discomforted situation with other pedestrians.

Under the influence of alcohol and other drugs you lose balance, sense of depth and it becomes difficult to avoid walking into someone’s space. Disorganised movement causes aggressive behaviour on busy night streets. Based on foot and step measurements I developed a series of outside floor tiles with which I can influence people’s movement in spaces without letting them noticing it. With the help of comfort or discomfort I can direct or organise crowd movement on streets.
